Our daughter goes to public school and just  a few days after school started, she came home with a fundraiser for the PTO (parent/teacher organization). One month in, another fundraiser for band. A couple of weeks ago, a fundraiser for FFA (future farmers of America). She mentioned the other day that in a few weeks her FBLA (future business leaders of America)  group will be holding a fundraiser. She'll be a great salesperson when she graduates, but good grief, this seems like overkill. Are other schools as excessive?

Nothing irks me more than the words 'fund rasiers'. Goverments do less and less, thus parents have not choice but raise money for this... for that...etc. Schools are now built without play grounds as school boards/goverment expect parents will simply raise the money for one. This ticks me off.

The more parents do, the more parents raise, the less school boards and goverment will allocate to building and running a school.

I share your sentiment about dreading fund raisers.  You give one time and before you know it, they send you letters twice, thrice, four times a year.  I know it's a noble act to contribute to a cause, but too much fund raising cheapens those causes!

I agree. When you have kids in sports its even worse, you are always raising money for uniforms, hotels, buses...etc. All ones spare time is fundraising.

With our 4-H group we had a project that needed funding. We asked the group (kids & parents) if they wanted to do a fundraiser or just donate however much they wanted to give. They decided to try just giving whatever, and we did it in such a way that nobody knew who gave how much. We wound up with double the amount we needed. Everyone gave generously to avoid doing a fundraiser! One evening and boom, it was done and we had money to donate to the community. I long for those easy fixes.

This seems true to me. In South Carolina our schools have been having some very deep budget cuts.

Wow! that is a lot!  My daughter just finished one today for her French class- a trip to Quebec.  I had no problem selling for this.  Then she told me that Band was having one- it's for their jackets.  I said sorry kiddo- I'll just pay for it... We aren't doing another fundraiser.  We only know so many people to sell to. I won't be a pain.

fundraisers are overdone at many schools today. sometimes they just do it because the opportunity arises. it is very annoying indeed

I agree Florentin. When I ask what these things are for, sometimes I get a direct answer--such as new music stands for band, etc. but most of the time it's just "for expenses."

Perhaps it's a topic that should be raised with administrators.

Things like that are just adding on to the expenses of the school.  That should not be tolerated.  One or two fundraisers each school year may be fine, but not more than that.

My daughter goes to a charter high school.  We had a fundraiser this month and raised just over $3000 in profit.  We sold pans of 1 dozen enchiladas for $15 dollars each.  We got local business to donate as much as they could in supplies and had the parents involved in the Parents Club and those students involved in Student Leadership do the rolling.  Each family was required to sell only 2 tickets, but they could sell more if they wanted to.  I took tickets to the local fire and police departments, county fire department and sheriffs department.  They went over really well.  It took us about 6 hours to roll the enchiladas, 300 dozen in all.  We had everything prepared prior to rolling though, meat cooked, cheese grated, etc.  On top of each pan, we taped a paper with instructions on how to heat up the enchiladas and a thank you to all the businesses that made donations.  We also ran a thank you notice in the local newspaper.
