Anyone ever hear of this? My oldest son went there and my youngest is there now. They learn a trade for free and also can get a diploma or GED too. It`s a great place to teach them the things they need in an adult world. My oldest learned welding and has a job paying $12 to start. He was also on the fireteam helping to put out wild land fires and helping during disasters like hurricanes. It was a great experience for him and helped him to grow up into a man.

I think these are great ideas for teens who may other wise just not finish school and become no productive members of society. I have a 17 year old step daughter who doesn't care for school and I worry about her. Now matter how much I tell her what I went threw not finishing school and having to go back she seems to not care. I hope that if she doesn't finish school she will consider this.

I did that when I was young and tried to get my son to go through them when he quit school. Unfortunately he would not do it. He is now 19 and has no job and lives with his grandmother who hands him money left and right. I feel it is a good program.

Congrats to your sons for getting into such great programs. I'm glad it made them turn into men (responsible men)-- that is wonderful. I've never heard of them before meeting you- and I don't know anyone who joined. Sounds like a great thing though for kids.

If you go to google and type jobcorps you will see all the different ones in different states. The kids are 16 to 23. They learn a trade of thier choice and get either a diploma or a GED. My 20 year old only needed to pass what they call the FCAT here in Florida.. He couldn`t pass the reading one so he got a certificate of completion and got to be in the graduation ceremony. Then he went to job corp in N.C. and they gave him some reading classes and he got a diploma. My 17 yr old son hates school so he didn`t have enough credits built up. He is getting a GED. His trade of choice is building maitinence.

I think this is a great idea. This is the first time, I had heard about job corps. Looks like they are an efficient organization. I hope they will continue doing good for the society.

That is a nice way for them to learn to become responsible and independent. But I think being a fire fighter and helping in disaster like hurricane can be a dangerous job.

Yes it is a dangerous job but my son loved the way people treated him with respect. They mostly just set up the fireline that goes towards the fire and clean up the forest floors and dead limbs. So if a fire does start it doesn`t go up like a match stick. They call that prescribed burn.
